Wigan United A.F.C.

Wigan United AFC was an Association Football Club existing in the early 1900's.

It was based in Wigan, a town (population approx. 80,000) on the River Douglas in the Metropolitan Borough of Wigan in Greater Manchester[1], England.

History of Association Football in Wigan

The town of Wigan has had numerous atteempts to produce a successful Football Club.

1 - Wigan County - formed in May 1897[2]. In April 1900 the club folded after fulfilling all of it's fixtures due to poor results and falling attendances, the club agreed to fulfil all its fixture. It was the first football club to play at Springfield Park

2 - Wigan United - ground Springfield Park (shared with Wigan Rugby League club whilst their new ground at Central Park was being constructed.

3 - Wigan Town - ground Springfield Park

4 - Wigan Association - played approx 1920 for a short period - ground Springfield Park

5 - Wigan Borough Formned Oct 1920, joined Football League, folded 1931 - ground Springfield Park

6 - Wigan Athletic formed 1932 - ground Springfield Park, JJB (renamed DW Stadium)
